CAMEOS
Cameos make brief appearances in the front stage discussion board. Typically they pop in once or twice during a semester to introduce themselves or ask a question about an assessment.

Joanne's story
I participate in the front stage if it’s graded. But that is a huge inconvenience for me because I'm a shift worker. So, when it's graded I just post for the sake of it. I am not learning.
I don’t have wi-fi at work, so I have to download everything on my ipad. Everything! Research articles, the outline, books I buy from Amazon to better understand the subject. The tutors have no way of knowing how much I study because I do it all offline.
At work I have 2 to 3 minute and sometimes 8, 9 or 10 minute breaks between tasks. That is the time that I put into reading writing, basically doing the course work. I am studying 2 to 10 minutes at a time. I also commute to work, so I study during that time too. I just fit it [studying] in whenever I can.
I get very excited when I can use my study to support people, like my girlfriend and people at work. There have been several occasions at work and home where I knew exactly what to do because I learned it through my studies. And my job is totally unrelated to my degree!

Yvette's story
I am happy to meet my classmates but I learned the hard way to stay away from those discussion boards! I’ve been led astray one too many times by other students who were just wrong. I need to learn to trust myself.
And, to be honest, sometimes I just want to be left alone. I interact with people all day long. If I need a “classmate” I have my workmates and clients.
Honestly, I don’t need to use the discussion board because I can talk about the content all day, and with different people, and different things come up that challenges my thinking. So, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.
You would be surprised by how much of the content comes up at work. I teach my colleagues how to use the content. I also have a couple of regular clients who are in the industry I study – they are always happy to answer questions. They are excited to quiz me too! It’s useful because they say stuff like, “Yes, technically you’re right, but it’s not like that in the real world.”
I also don’t really consider myself a “joiner” so you won’t find me in the Facebook groups with the other students.
